Do Border Collies Enjoy the Water?

As dog owners, it’s common for us to want to give our dogs the best life possible. This doesn’t just mean feeding them consistently and making sure they have space at home. For many pet parents, giving their dogs a good life means taking them out on adventures that will bring a lot of joy.

And if you have a Border Collie, you might be wondering if bringing them to a body of water would be a good idea. After all, there are tons of dogs that have the time of their lives when in the water, so it wouldn’t be a stretch to think Border Collies are the same.

Are Dogs Attracted to Water?

Generally, most dogs enjoy being in the water. However, this isn’t something that’s innate for all dogs. In fact, there are tons of dog breeds that would not be a great fit in a pool or river, and bringing them to a body of water can even be dangerous for them.

For example, let’s look at pugs. While these dogs are very cute, they have been bred to have shorter snouts over the years. And since they are small dogs, it can be hard for them to swim and get air in the water. So if you have a pug, it’s best to keep them away from the water.

Another example is Daschunds. Since these dogs are long and short, they don’t make for the best swimmers. This is why these types of dogs would rather have adventures on the ground.

With that said, this doesn’t go for Border Collies. Many Border Collies know how to swim instinctively, and since they are working dogs, they have a lot of energy to enjoy their time in the water.

So, while not all dogs would enjoy a trip to the beach or the lake, there’s a high chance that your Border Collie would really enjoy swimming around all day.

Are Border Collies Good Swimmers?

Border Collies, like all dogs, know how to swim instinctively. This isn’t something you need to teach them, which is why they can jump in the water without any training. On top of that, these dogs don’t have the natural hindrances to keep them from being good swimmers like pugs, corgis, and Dachshunds.

However, before letting your dog swim freely in the water, ensure they are comfortable first. Not all Border Collies will be comfortable with the water right away. And if you force them into it, you could traumatize your pet, so make sure to take things slow.

Should I Bring My Border Collie to the Water?

If you’ve wanted to take your Border Collie out on an adventure, then a body of water is a great idea, especially in the summer. Border Collies have thick coats, so a swim on a hot summer’s day will be a lot of fun. And since these dogs have a ton of energy, you can surely have a lot of fun with them by the lake or on the beach.

Again, we have to stress that this doesn’t go for all Border Collies. Before forcing your dog into a situation they won’t enjoy, we recommend starting slow. There’s no harm in checking if your dog is comfortable with the water first before bringing them on a trip. So, if your dog doesn’t like the water, then it’s best to keep them at home during these trips.

Conclusion

If you’re heading to the beach or lake soon, you might want to consider taking your Border Collies. These dogs are natural swimmers that have tons of energy. So, bringing them out to a body of water is a great way for them to have fun while also draining their energy.

With that said, it’s best to always keep your eye on your dog when they’re in the water. You never know what can happen to them while swimming, and it’s best to be prepared to act when needed.

If you want to make sure you and your dog have a good time, make sure to check if they’re comfortable with the water first. And if they aren’t, then don’t force them, as forcing them into the water can do more harm than good.
